Research question

This research project aims to create an archive of the widespread experiences of prison theatre, specifically within the Sicilian context, an undertaking not yet systematically conducted. While social theatre traditionally emphasises its therapeutic use in contexts of social and personal hardship, performance studies challenge the stereotypes associated with a purely therapeutic framework, privileging instead, through the perspective of As Performance, a theatrical reading of realities that are not inherently theatricalised. Within the Italian context, environments marked by strong marginalisation are increasingly regarded as privileged spaces for fostering individual renewal, leading to the growth of theatrical activities within penitentiary institutions. Despite the significant scientific and media attention devoted to this phenomenon, there remains a lack of adequate archival documentation, especially concerning local initiatives, including the Libera Compagnia del Teatro per Sognare, established within the Messina prison facility.

Methodology to achieve the objectives

A qualitative research methodology will be employed. Following a comprehensive review and cataloguing of the relevant scholarly literature, the pioneering experience of Volterra will serve as the basis for both national and regional comparison. Starting from a mapping of the various Italian prison theatre companies, investigated through both academic study and fieldwork, interviews will be conducted with performers, together with directors and workshop leaders responsible for theatrical productions and training activities. This is a practice-based research project, as the doctoral candidate actively participates in the theatrical initiative within the Messina prison as assistant director. To provide greater visibility to a phenomenon that is widely studied yet still difficult to access, the project also aims to develop a digital archive of prison theatre companies, particularly those operating in Sicily. Furthermore, the research seeks to encourage collaboration among different penitentiary institutions to establish a network of artistic communication and exchange.

Case Studies

Among the various experiences examined, special focus will be placed on the Messina-based company, recognised within the contemporary theatre landscape for performances staged outside prison walls. This initiative provides inmates with theatrical training that may continue after release, thereby ensuring both personal development and the continuity of the company itself. Equally important will be the investigation of additional Italian and Sicilian case studies to achieve a comprehensive archival documentation of the phenomenon. During the international research period, a comparative study will also be undertaken with director Rui Frati, director of Théâtre de l’Opprimé, to accomplish a thorough methodological comparison between the Messina and French experiences.

Data Analysis and Interpretation of Results

In this initial phase, the relevant scholarly literature has been examined, including the work of Storani, which offers a rigorous and insightful framework for understanding the phenomenon. In addition, audiovisual and visual materials related to the Messina company have begun to be analysed to reconstruct a precise chronological profile of its activities and experiences. This preliminary investigation has already revealed an exponential growth in both the quality and quantity of the company’s repertoire. Bibliografia Boal, A. (2020). Giochi per attori e non attori.
